چکیده

The reaction n̄e1p ̃e 1n is very important for low-energy (En&60 MeV) antineutrino experiments. In this paper we calculate the positron angular distribution, which at low energies is slightly backward. We show that weak magnetism and recoil corrections have a large effect on the angular distribution, making it isotropic at about 15 MeV and slightly forward at higher energies. We also show that the behavior of the cross section and the angular distribution can be well understood analytically for En&60 MeV by calculating to O(1/M ), where M is the nucleon mass. The correct angular distribution is useful for separating n̄e1p ̃e 1n events from other reactions and detector backgrounds, as well as for possible localization of the source ~e.g., a supernova! direction. We comment on how similar corrections appear for the lepton angular distributions in the deuteron breakup reactions n̄e1d ̃e 1n1n and ne1d ̃e 1p1p . Finally, in the reaction n̄e1p ̃e 1 1n , the angular distribution of the outgoing neutrons is strongly forward peaked, leading to a measurable separation in positron and neutron detection points, also potentially useful for rejecting backgrounds or locating the source direction. @S0556-2821~99!04015-1#

Non-Relativistic Limit of Neutron Beta-Decay Cross-Section in the Presence of Strong Magnetic Field

One of the most important reactions of the URCA that lead to the cooling of a neutron star, is neutron beta-decay ( ). In this research, the energy spectra and wave functions of massive fermions taking into account the Anomalous Magnetic Moment (AMM) in the presence of a strong changed magnetic field are calculated. For this purpose, the Dirac-Pauli equation for charged and neutral fermions is ...

Muon Spallation in Double Chooz

This report presents my work for Double Chooz at MIT during the 2009 Summer REU program, funded by Columbia University. Double Chooz is a reactor neutrino experiment that aims to measure the mixing parameter θ13. The experiment detects electron antineutrinos via inverse beta decay. Neutrons and light nuclei made in muon spallation are a major background to the experiment. The delayed neutron em...

Supernova Relic Neutrino Search with Neutron Tagging at Super-Kamiokande-IV

A search for Supernova Relic Neutrinos ν̄e’s is first conducted via inverse-beta-decay by tagging neutron capture on hydrogen at Super-Kamiokande-IV. The neutron tagging efficiency is determined to be (17.74 ± 0.04stat. ± 1.05sys.)%, while the corresponding accidental background probability is (1.06 ± 0.01stat. ± 0.18sys.)%. Using 960 days of data, we obtain 13 inverse-beta-decay candidates in t...

Inverse beta-decay in magnetic fields

We calculate the cross section of the inverse beta decay process, νe + n → p + e, in a magnetic field which is much smaller than m2p/e. Using exact solutions of the Dirac equation in a constant magnetic field, we find that the cross section depends on the direction of the incident neutrino even when the initial neutron is assumed to be at rest. We discuss the implication of this result for puls...

A method for an improved measurement of the electron–antineutrino correlation in free neutron beta decay

The angular correlation between the beta electron and antineutrino in nuclear beta decay is characterized by the dimensionless parameter a. The value of a for free neutron decay, when combined with other neutron decay parameters, can be used to determine the weak vector and axial vector coupling constants gV and gA and test the validity and selfconsistency of the Electroweak Standard Model. Pre...
